Developing Multi-Module SOP Safety Animations for a Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturer

  1. The Premise

Cipla Ltd., a renowned global pharmaceutical manufacturer, operates cutting-edge API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) and formulation plants across India, including its large-scale Kurkumbh facility in Maharashtra. To reinforce safe operational behaviors and build a consistent training framework for SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), Cipla sought to digitize their internal training assets using professionally animated safety videos.

Recognizing CORE EHS’s expertise in industrial animation and domain familiarity, Cipla entrusted us with the task of developing 6–7 custom 3D animated SOP videos, each ranging from 8 to 10 minutes, making up a comprehensive 60-minute learning suite.

  1. The Challenges

Despite having documented SOPs and trainer-led safety sessions, Cipla’s EHS leadership encountered several recurring issues:

  • Variability in how SOPs were communicated during different shifts or by different trainers.
  • Lack of engaging, visual training material led to retention rates below 60% among shop-floor workers.
  • Onboarding new operators or contract workers consumed substantial trainer time and resources.
  • The need to align safety communications across diverse roles (engineering, production, quality) required a uniform, repeatable, and high-clarity delivery method.

Additionally, all animations needed to follow strict pharma safety guidelines while staying relevant to Cipla’s internal compliance framework.

  1. The Solution

CORE EHS proposed and executed the development of a multi-module 3D animated SOP training series, totaling 60 minutes of content. The project was delivered in phases based on Cipla’s milestone-linked model, as outlined in the purchase order valued at ₹2,747,394 (inclusive of taxes).

Key Features:

  • Development of 6–7 distinct SOP training films, each 8–10 minutes long.
  • High-quality 3D visuals and animated characters for realistic demonstration of tasks, such as equipment setup, safety precautions, PPE usage, and critical control steps.
  • Professional English voiceover tailored to pharma shop-floor context.
  • Custom sequencing, titling, and editing based on each SOP’s criticality and workflow.
  • Final videos delivered in HD .mp4 format, ready for deployment via LMS, kiosks, or centralized display.

The project followed a structured milestone-based billing system: 30% advance, followed by 40% on first-draft delivery and 30% on final delivery for each SOP module.

  1. Resulting Benefits

The finished suite of safety animation modules has significantly strengthened Cipla’s training processes:

  • Training time reduced by 45% for new joiners due to visual clarity and standardized delivery.
  • Retention of critical procedural steps improved by over 52%, based on internal post-training quizzes.
  • Trainers and EHS officers experienced a 58% reduction in repeat sessions, freeing up capacity for strategic safety planning.
  • Visual SOPs enabled more effective communication with contractual and multilingual workforce segments.
  • The animated content is now under consideration for pan-India rollout across other Cipla API and formulation sites.

This project highlights how well-structured, SOP-specific safety animation can convert traditional documentation into an engaging, scalable, and high-impact learning tool for pharma manufacturing environments.
