Training Strengthening Mine Safety Through Vocational Training

A major oil and gas company operating in the Barmer region of Rajasthan initiated a long-term safety training program at its Mangala Processing Terminal. The project was awarded to Core EHS, formerly known as ASK EHS Engineering & Consultants, under a contractual agreement dated October 3, 2018. This initiative was designed to align with the organization’s core commitment to sustainable operations, workplace safety, and compliance with statutory mining regulations.

Challenges

The client was overseeing operations at one of the largest onshore oil fields in India, where the nature of the work involved high-risk activities within mining zones. Key challenges included:

  • A lack of standardized vocational safety training across multiple operational units.
  • Growing concerns over incident rates and unsafe practices due to limited awareness and the periodic turnover of contract workers.
  • The necessity to comply with regulatory norms for mine safety under the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS).
  • Difficulty in managing a large, multilingual workforce with varying levels of literacy and safety exposure.

Implementing a centralized, long-term training module in a remote location like Barmer, while ensuring consistent quality and engagement, posed both logistical and pedagogical challenges.

Solution We Provided and How

WE developed and delivered a three-year Mines Vocational Safety Training Program specifically tailored for Health, Safety, Environment & Security (HSES) needs in high-risk oilfield environments. Key components included:

  • Modular training content focused on mine safety, emergency preparedness, fire safety, and environmental awareness.
  • Multilingual delivery to ensure inclusivity and comprehension among workers from diverse backgrounds.
  • On-site delivery model based at the Mangala Processing Terminal to minimize disruption and ensure relevance.
  • Deployment of expert trainers experienced in mining and hazardous environment safety training.
  • Interactive sessions reinforced by practical drills, behavior-based safety modules, and HIRA (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment) exercises.

Resulting Benefits of the Solution

  • Marked improvement in employees’ awareness and understanding of mine safety protocols
  • Enhanced compliance with internal safety standards and national mining safety regulations
  • Noticeable decline in unsafe acts and increased reporting of potential hazards by employees
  • Stronger integration of safety practices into daily operations and worker behaviour
  • Greater confidence among safety officers and supervisors in managing on-ground risks
  • Development of a proactive safety culture that supports long-term organizational sustainability
